Amp location. / Trickle charger

I have the Hifi sound system in my car which is crying out for help so an upgrade is nigh . Out of curiosity am I right in thinking the Amp is located in the trunk left side behind panels ?
Also since I’m not driving much at the moment due to COVID has anyone connected a trickle charger ? On my last car I was able to leave the cable connected to the positive battery post and a suitable earth point. Is that possible on the G11 or is it best connected within the engine bay ? Thanks .

I have fitted a CTEK adapter to my G12 on the terminals under the bonnet.

Periodically I stick the car on trickle charge over the weekend just to keep it topped up. Means I can run the cable down between the light and the grille and shut the bonnet to lock the car.

Ditto above...only trickle charge or jump from the dedicated positive & negative points in the engine bay designed for this purpose. If you connect directly to the battery post while it is still installed...you bypass the IBS (intelligent battery sensor). If the IBS picks up “undetermined” changes to the battery’s power...it can incorrectly interpret those changes as an issue...and you could then start to get warnings from the check control system. So to avoid this...jump or charge from the engine bay terminals only. If you don’t know exactly where the negative & positive jump terminals are located...they should be pointed out in the owners manual. Not everything in the engine bay that you think is grounded...is grounded...so to avoid not truly connecting to ground...use the dedicated negative jump terminal. Sometimes the negative jump terminal is a dedicated hex bolt and sometimes it’s just a small metal pin. My 2013 6 series has a simple metal pin...my 2014 X5 has a hex bolt.

Thank you , I had hoped to leave it permanently connected but looks like it may not be possible. I know on my Jaguar I could connect it permanently to the positive battery post and the negative to an earthing bolt in the boot / trunk. I need to find my crocodile connectors for the Ctek which I had discarded . But that’s really helpful.

Cheers

Conor

You can connect it permanently as that's what I have done.

I used a ring terminal and modified the housing to allow the terminal to connect to the positive.

The negative you can undo and put the ring terminal under it before tightening again.

You can see mine here. Took a bit of modification but the circled areas show the two connections and the CTEK.

CTEK do ring clamp connections. It was M8 or M10 I needed.

Hybrid

Can one trickle charge the plug-in hybrid model, 740Le?

Seems like the 12V battery cant keep up with all the electric stuff the car is having on. I cant sit even 5 min inside the car with out the "battery warning" going on.

My usage of the car is 90% of very short distances, maybe 5-10km (4-8 miles). This type of usage really eats up the 12V, the main hybrid battery is doing extremely well and I'm getting almost the MPG what BMW claims

I mean 100+ MPG just because I can charge the main hybrid battery often. But the 12V isnt keeping up...

So ... Can one trickle charge (Ctek etc) the 12V at the engine bay?

I don't have a hybrid, and would have thought that charging a hybrid's propulsion battery would also charge the ICE 12v but seems like I'm wrong.

In any event, the CTEK charger works just fine on a '20 750ix. I have a mix of short and occasional long (85 mi) trips and charge about every 2 months. My understanding is it is easier to maintain battery health if you lock the car when you leave it.
