4-zone air conditioning malfunction / issue?
All,
I have observed that the rear vents on my car either emit super-cold air (in the lowest tem setting) or super-hot air (in any setting above the lowest possible) Is this how this should work? I went to my BMW service shop three times to report it and they came back with a response that they don't know what causes the problem, don't know if it is a problem in the first place, and won't touch the car's physical components. They flashed the A/C's ECU and that should have solved any issues according to them They received to support / approval from the BMW importer and I'm stuck with an unusable A/C. Or am I just too sensitive and the stuff works as intended?? May I ask how the 4-zone climate control works on your cars? I suspect it should allow to set a desired temperature level and keep it there. Not in a MAX/MIN mode with no spectrum in between...? Thanks for your thoughts

Has BMW done away with the stratified air dial (or feature if the dial has been removed) for the rear vent? That dial used to allow the rear passengers to temper the air front that vent warmer/cooler to accommodate situations where the set temp may be too warm or too cool due to sitting in the shade or sitting in the sun. The driver doesn’t have to adjust the temp of the entire cabin because the rear passenger can adjust the temp of the rear vent.
I believe on some of the newer models…the stratified air dial has been removed and incorporated into an AC menu selection. Check your owners manual to see if this may be the issue. If the stratified air selection is dialed into the red zone…then warmed/heated air will blow from the vent regardless of the temp you have set. You may need to bring the dial to the neutral/center location or even into the cooler (blue) zone if you want only cooled air. The pics below shows the rear AC vent and control panel from my f06 6 series owners manual. You can see that you can set a specific temp in the display…but there are physical dials that you can use to (quickly) temper the air warmer/cooler if you need an immediate but simple adjustment.
