So, TO SAVE MONEY/HASSLE ordering, I'm considering a pair of $700 Netgear Enterprise 10G switches to run a single SAN with redundant VM hosts? Yes, no?

Buying an EX3400 or Extreme (any model) for 2 paths to a SAN seems like way overkill. The Netgear has a full 16@10G, although only single ps. That's why I buy 2 of them?

I'm assuming your SAN is iSCSI. You should be fine with just one switch. The added switch is for redundancy in any SAN topology. Also there are MPIO considerations but that's just splitting hairs with small SAN environment. Because iSCSI runs over TCP/IP, you have a bit of a fail safe if there might be a hiccup with data communications from host to storage. You don't get that luxury with fiber channel. For what it's worth, I run a single Cisco MDS9148S fiber channel switch that supports my fiber channel attached hosts and SAN. In my situation, my entire vSphere 6.5 environment is running on this infrastructure sitting on two Dell servers (R730 and FC630/FX2) connected to a Compellent SC4020 over 8Gb. I also have a Dell (forget the model number) PowerVault iSCSI array. When I use that, it's on a single 10GbaseT switch (PowerConnect 8024).

Netgear has always impressed me with good value for the money. I've used a lot of ProSafe stuff in my home network. I currently have a couple of Netgear switches on my network (have retired a bunch of other ones). I have a M4300 8X8F switch in my office providing 10Gig to my desktop. Totally impressed with this switch with the feature set where it even supports BGP routing.

You might want to consider picking up a Dell PowerConnect 8024 as they're probably really cheap on Fleabay now. It's based on a Broadcom chipset and has dual power supplies.

Did I mention Mission Critical CAD system for Police?

I just can't see the need for $10K in Extreme switches, nor even $7K for Juniper that will only give me 4@10G.

Our current system runs all off a single Dell R6xx, all internal storage, using Hyper-V. I have no experience with VM nor SAN, so I'm struggling to understand why I need to spend more on switches than the servers we're buying. I think it's EXTREME overkill to even use a SAN, although with the idea of HA, I can see some justification. With at most 4 officers in the field at a time, 1G should be fine, in my uninformed opinion.

Have you looked into using Storage Spaces for the required shared data stores for Hyper V? It's part of the whole hyperconverged discussion where the storage is moved from traditional SANs into the nodes themselves. There is a minimum requirement on the number of nodes and the hardware they have. It's usually 3 although I think VSAN for VMware and Nutanix are now offering the ability to run on 2 nodes. At that point, you just get any run of the mill 10Gig switch.

Oh and I didn't know this is for work. Yes, you want some redundancy built into the infrastructure. I'd still consider Netgear for any SMB type environment. As you're probably aware, one of the key things with purchasing business grade IT equipment is the support. Not sure if Netgear offers the same robust support options an Extreme or Juniper would provide. But heck with the cost savings, you could just buy a spare Netgear switch to have on the shelf and throw it in if one of the switches fail.

Another thing about this level of switches, you're going to be in for a fairly steep learning curve. I've never touched an Extreme switch so I can't say if the command line is a pain to navigate or if there is a GUI. I do have experience with Juniper switches and firewalls. You're in for a very steep learning curve with JUNOS. I grew up with networking on Cisco IOS. JUNOS and IOS couldn't be further apart. Also Juniper switches are literally servers with lots of NIC ports. There is a file system in it on non volatile storage. They claim you can pull power to the switch without issues but they don't recommend you do it all the time. To properly power down a Juniper device, you have to issue a shutdown command to ensure the file system doesn't get corrupted.

No worries. Just realize the quality of the advice I am giving is what you're paying for it...free. LOL.

I'd like to re-think my last post on here. Not for me. I worked for at&t and was a fiber tech. I love technology, but hate the ways in which it is being used. I'd love to have automated/voice automated stuff in my home, but I also don't want anyone with a computer to be able to paint any more of a picture of my life than what they already have from my cell phone usuage.

^Scary shit, once you look into it, isn't it. A down right voluntary infiltration of people's privacy that they're even paying for, and not only on the front end.

And it's getting harder to escape this crap. More and more devices are coming with mics built in to them. I've been tempted to tear apart the remotes with mics and to disconnect them.

The reason Juniper was even on the list is because that's what the rest of our core consists of. I grew up Cisco too, but both that and the Juniper I always maintained a professional service agreement. I was smart enough to understand/make a decision, but just dumb enough to have recently locked myself out of the root password, AGAIN And my old Windows XP comm port is too slow on this Monday morning to catch the 1-second delay to boot in and change.

I bought the Junipers this morning. It's only $$$
