Sunroof creaks...

I just bought my car about 6 weeks ago and it's almost completely free of squeaks, creaks or rattles with the exception of some annoying creaks coming from what I've determined is the sunroof area.

It happens when the sunshade is retracted and it's very irritating. I can get the noise to go away if I push my hand in there and press down on the retracted sunshade. Anyone else have this problem? Any thoughts on a solution?

Have this issue as well with the Skylounge, been to the dealer and test drove it and a couple of days later they called me back & showed me a service doc that describes the procedure to solve this.

I quickly went through the printed doc & saw that it involves removing the interior roof liner and re-tightening all the screws that hold the sunroof assembly to the car frame... :-( not a very inspiring procedure.

I have agreed to carry out the fix during the next maintenance call

Resurrecting an ancient thread ;-)

I have this annoying creak in my sunroof area, when closed. I purchased with 2 year BMW AUC Warranty but apparently seals and things like this are not covered.

So short of paying a small fortune for the above fix/man hours, are there any quick fixes for this anybody knows about? I can't seem to find anything on Youtube relating to the G11, thinking sunroof may be very similar to G30 but again struggling to find anything. Even if it involves wedging something in there, putting something to lubricate the seal.

Anyone have a link to the service document for this specific problem so that I can identify the exact place in question? Thanks to anyone who can help.

Is it the sunshade or the sun roof? How old is the car? My 2018 car has Sky Lounge and the shade and roof are squeak free (touches wood).

Krytox is good (but expensive) for lubing up seals and keeping them squeak free.

If its the roof then open fully and lube the seals with krytox. The mechanism use white lithium grease. You can get a WD40 Specialist tin of it to spray carefully in hard to reach areas.

If its the shade then again WD40 White Lithium on the runners and if you can get a finger or cotton bud in then use Krytox.

Thanks all, it appears to be the sunshade as opposed to the glass because it only creaks when the sunshade is retracted (Closed). I have a G11 730D, 2016 model.

Are these service bulletins valid for UK cars and if so and a known fault, surely they would have to repair this for me as part of the official Approved Used Car purchase with 24 months cover? I'll check the bulletins to see if they tally up with my issue.

You got 24 months of cover? Usually used approved BMW’s come with 1 year of cover but it’s really good to have. It covers just about any faults!

Yes mate, I took it out extra, about £500 but thought that was well worth it!

They fobbed me off when I asked about fixing it, seals etc are not covered but if I can prove to them it's a known fault on other G11's (I'm sure they are aware of it anyway) then I can make them fix it when I book it in for it's next service, in a month or so time.
