When BMW design goes bold, it wins. BMW overtook Mercedes sales during the Bangle era.

Regarding "every model BMW"...yup, I'm old enough to remember when the E39 came out, it was said by many to be the ugliest thing ever.

It’s because someone at bmw executive leadership has lost their mind and hired blind designers (new 7er, lci x7, XM)

I can’t help to think the same.

And I can afford the 7er, in case you were wondering. And for additional perspective I love the nose of the m3/m4/i4 and I have an incoming iXM60

I guess it's supposed to be reminiscent of the Ghost's two tone scheme?

Hating on everything is the culture now. Also, new generation don't come to these forums, those from older generation miss their younger years and all things associated with those years.

BMW's latest design moves have been a success by every available metric, but the toxic haters will never be satisfied.
They know their client base or future client base. Their new design language screams "Look at me, I'm different". Just like our current world culture.

Agreed…and it looks a lot better than it's competition…the merc's are fugly, Audi's boring and the Cadi's are just weird looking….I bet this Gen will outsell the last and will sell better than the Audi A8.

The A/S8 has never outsold the 7er so that's guaranteed, its one of the lowest selling vehicles in its class. The true competition is the S-Class which has had a long streak of outselling most of its competitors combined.

Haven't really looked at the design since the initial uproar a few months ago when BMW unveiled it. With a fresh pair of eyes, it definitely looks like straight ass. Haphazard and non-cohesive design.

Thankfully it has an interior to die for. One of the most impressive interiors I've ever seen of any car irregardless of price.

Two tone works well with those split headlights. Saw an i7 in the flesh the other day and thought it looked great. I’d take this one pictured here over that in a heartbeat though, looks like a million bucks

E38 is a looker, just a guess but I’d bet they’re more comparable in size to the current 5er though. It’s the “sporty shorty” 740i’s that look great, not the iL models. Those looked a tad boaty.

Can you share an official metric which shows more BMW sales in the US than in 2014 or in 2015?

Nope, not doing it for me. Boxy and crap. The only good thing there is the circular lights which they evolved into halo/angel.

I miss those.

Uhhhh….just saw this on my FB feed - the same two tone paint and 2 extra cylinders for 1/10 the price!!! That G70 is heinous….I think this Excursion wears the two tone better.

What an abomination.

But, if the ugly g80 grew on people, so will this.

Thankfully, normal people are not getting banned for their opinions like when the previous abomination came out.

Buddy, you can't have your cake and nobody else gets theirs.
You like ugly BMW's in the range, other people will like these. I like the G20, for example, although that's not ugly (yet...)

Taste is subjective, regardless of what the objective truth may be (poll a billion people, they will tell you the new BMW's of today are far less attractive than their predecessors. Compared to contemporary automakers, still debatable. Give me a new Mercedes SL over literally anything BMW designed in the last three years.)

The two tone is subjective but the real problem here is the black bane mask the car wears. Aventurine red and cashmere silver don’t go with a murdered out angry grille.

I was a defender of the G8x grille but the front of the 7 is something else. It doesn’t fit the car I think. It just doesn’t look elegant, cohesive, or expensive.

Everyone knows a new design and edgy design that pushes things forward will attract negative comments. A lot of people have taken it overboard.

At the same time, so have the designers. I don’t think the choice has to be bold OR handsome. I think you can do both. These new designs feel like a fad to me and not timeless. It feels like design is forgetting about the sporty, clean elegance that the brand had for a long time. Everything looks either garish or out of place somehow. If you wanted the 4er and M4 to push an edgy language, that’s fine, but we now see this everywhere in the line. Bangle butt worked because it was appropriate for the car. Flame surfacing worked on the Z4 because it was cohesive and harmonious with the rest of the car.

A 7 series should look like a BMW in its most refined form. It should evoke envy in those that gaze at it. I just don’t think this design achieves those goals. A great talking point, but a model to be forgotten in a future walk through the generations.
