Odd grinding noise
So i have about 650 or so miles on my F80, and it seems that whenever the car sits overnight or sits for a day, whenever i start it up and start driving it makes a really weird grinding noise usually at low speeds, sounds like im grinding gears, but i'm not. seems to be coming from the right side of the car, i think towards the rear. anyone else experience this?

Sounds like the diff. Does it only happen when turning? M cars of the past have made "grinding" diff noises on slow turns , and it was considered "normal".

If it's a pulse grind that doesn't come back, it's ABS doing a test cycle.
If it's your diff, it will happen all the time in that given situation. People on here tend to assume something is broken when given an incomplete description. Please explain more. |

My diff was going bad and it made the noise at low speed and turning and it went away at high speeds.

The E9x M3 had an issue with a noisy diff when turning at low speeds. There was a service bulletin to replace the diff fluid with a different one, which corrected the problem. I don't know if this is the same thing, but just saying that a noisy diff doesn't necessarily mean that it is failing. I hope it turns to be nothing.

I wouldn't characterize diff grinding noises as "normal". It's not supposed to make that sound. Did many e46+e9x Ms suffer from that noise? yes. But mostly well into the life of the car not within the first 1000 mi. As mentioned usually changing the diff fluid did the trick but not always. IMO, the only acceptable drivetrain noises one should hear from a $70k car should be when you are putting the transmission into gear. Hopefully this is NBD but better bring it in to be safe rather than sorry.

This forum messes with the statistics so good. And since we write most about the fails, now all we can spot are those. Let's wait for the numbers before crying ourselves to sleep every night. I'm pretty sure we don't get the same picture as can be seen from them.

Guess that will leave more F8x cars for those who really want them.

So a handful of issues vs nothing wrong from the several other hundred(s) of M3/4 from all the press reviews, YouTube reviews, and magazine write ups. I feel for the folks who have had issues, but so far the number of good vehicles far out way the bad. That being said, I pick up my M3 tomorrow and now I'm going to have every issue I just mentioned.....I'm starting to sound like you Lups.....I have to quit these forums

I recommend we start these threads below:
- M3 accelerates too fast when throttle pedal pushed down, jerks my head - Warm (and then HOT) air comes out of exhaust pipes after starting car, doesn't go away until after car is turned off - Gas tank drains quickly after only driving 300 highway miles, is there a hole in my gas tank? - left turn blinker seems to blink 20ms faster than E92 M3, extremely annoying! - No sunroof on my Carbon Fiber roof, SA screwed me? - Manual transmission missing 7th gear, worst transmission evar! - excessive wind noise when only one window glass is rolled down, even at only 50mph
