My new M4 arrives this Friday
Need to make a post to get 'verified,' so this is it. New guy, just bought a 2021 M4 Competition. Should be here Thurs-Friday. Have always liked M cars, but this is the first German car I've ever bought. As you may guess from my user name, have been a Vette driver for the past 15 years--before that, GM F bodies--Trans AMs, Z-28s. Really looking forward to this car --black/black not just for the performance, but the luxury interior, tech goodies, etc.. The "flier" in my user name is former Air Force aviator--F-4 Phantoms. Guess you could say I always liked speed...looking forward to learning a lot from you guys. Live in Colorado, btw.

Greetings & Salutations! I traveled the same path for many years. Multiple Vettes and other fast GM products. I rode in a friend's E60 M5 and I thought there was no way average human beings could build such a car. So, I went from an E60 M5, to the F10 M Comp and finally to a F90 M5 for a few more days. Taking delivery of a Tanzanite blue M4 this weekend. M5's are awesome cars but, I pretty much the only driver for it. I think that the M4 Comp is what I need - happy place machine.

Easy questions first. I've had an '06, '13 and my current '18 C7. Beyond a doubt, the '18 is the best car I've ever owned. Performance is outstanding, and it looks as good as any sports car out there today--including Ferraris. I've loved the car since I got it in Aug of '17--an early '18. The '19s are absolutely identical--every nut and bolt, so mileage is more important than year. I only have 7100 on it, so has an excellent resale value--partly, for the following reason.
C8 Corvettes are unicorns. For the past month, you can no longer order one. They're still catching up with orders place in 2019 for the 20! The ones available in dealer stock have a $20-25,000 markup from sticker, and all are loaded to the hilt with every option available. As an example, my dealer from whom I bought my last 2, has a $95,000 list 3LT--top trim level, for $25,000 over sticker. Then, there is the fact that while it has a great powertrain, it is plain ugly from the sideview. Deck way too long (to fit the trunk); hood way too short in perspective. Porsche did it right on the Cayman; Chevy made it ugly. So, none available for at least the next 12-18 months unless you want to get totally ripped off; don't like the style. Because of that, trade in for a cherry late model C7 is fantastic! Mine will have held 88% of its value over 3 2/3 years. Wanted an M4C without a ton of options I had no use or desire for. Some like cars loaded to the hilt, I don't. Most of the instock ones I've seen are low 90s. Told my local dealer I'm ok with $80-85K. Found one at a large dealer in LA--black/black, ~ 5k in options--Exec Package, carbon fiber interior, Shadowline lights, and black paint. Just what I wanted. They're only now hitting dealers for stock order cars, so was very happy. Fair deal, good trade for the Vette--that they really want for their lot, $2500 veteran incentive from BMW, and they picked up the shipping costs. Couldn't be happier. Plus, the Vettes lose a lot of hp here at 7000', about 100-120. Turbocharged cars don't, so will be considerably faster. That is no bad thing... Sorry this is long, but hey! I'm a newbie! |

I seriously considered a C7 before I leased my 2015 M4, but ultimately, the C7 didn't quite fit my personality. Quote:

And indeed, I think the C8 has some odd angles to say the least. It's proportioned funny, I agree. Quote:

Nice color. I do like some blues. As to what makes a Sports Car, not a Sports Coupe, look good, I agree highly subjective. But there are fewer and fewer front engine sports cars. The F8 Superfast looks great, but most Ferraris are mid-engine, and I just don't like the design compromises they make. The C8 is a perfect example. McLarens are great cars, but ungainly. The Huracan Performante looks pretty good, but Lambos have never really appealed to me. As I said, the Cayman was done right, and the 911s are classic. But, classic can mean outdated, too conservative. C7 Corvettes were on the money. Huge improvement on the C6 which was a bit too conservative. AMG GTs look good, but proportions are just a bit off. To each his own. BTW, I like the grill, and worst case, good conversation starter...

As someone who has owned several vettes myself I bet you will be happy with how nice the interior feels compared to American cars and how you won't generally encounter things like paint flaking off body panels due to poor fitment and things like that. BMWs just feel like more solidly built vehicles IMO. Loved mine for what they were but I don't really regret cancelling my C7Z order and getting my M3. Two different cars to be sure but I don't ever see myself going back to American cars. I think the C8Z is going to pp slap most European sports cars in the performance arena, but I think I'm past the point where I care that much about bang for the buck performance while sacrificing quality of fit and finish.

My parents have had C6, C7 and recently got their C8. They tried hard to get me to get one of those instead of another M4. They are sweet looking cars for sure, but I thought a little bit too overt for my daily driving and working parking needs and in general just not as practical. At least the M's can go under the radar (assuming you don't get something like SPY). For those that don't know what they are looking at it could just be another BMW, and BMW's are cars for the people these days starting in the $30k's. And my parents waited 14 months to get their car from when they ordered it. No way do I have that much patience.

Interior is gorgeous. High quality materials, but aimed at the enthusiast. The 3LT on the C8 has much better interior quality--for $15k! but can't match the M4. Very pleased with it. 14 months to get a car you ordered is a joke. Some will end up waiting almost 2 years! C8 isn't an 812 Superfast, so Chevy shot themselves in the foot with the intro, and then the China Virus really f-'d it up.

I keep telling my dad that his car was built in Kentucky by some guy named Lenny. It was certainly hard to beat the Factory to dealer time (once it was actually built) from KY to OH compared to Germany to the US though. They have their factory delivery option, but it's $1k and you still have to pay the $995 delivery fee even though you are delivering it to you yourself! It looks nothing like the Welt experience was.

European Delivery was an equally magical experience all 4 times I did it. I'm hoping they bring it back someday, but I'm not overly optimistic.
