IND | 3D Design G8X M3 / M4 Carbon Front Lip Install Guide

Tools Required:

For Bumper Removal:
  • Socket Wrench
  • 8mm Socket
  • 10mm Socket
  • T25 Torx

For Lip Install:
  • Socket Wrench
  • 8mm Socket
  • Flat Head Screwdriver/Pry Tool
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • 7mm Open-end Wrench
  • Drill with 5/32" Bit

STEP 1: Remove front bumper: Remove push-pins securing front weather stripping panel and remove. Loosen front section of front fender liners by removing 10mm bolts; unfasten corners of bumper from fenders by removing x2 8mm screws. Remove T25 screws,10mm bolts, and push pins securing bumper cover and remove from car. Be sure to detach any electrical connectors housed inside bumper cover prior to removal.

STEP 2: Begin by loosening the support panels on each side of the inner bumper cover; remove x2 8mm bolts on back of panel and unclip the 4 outer tabs.

STEP 3: Detach corner splitters from bumper cover by removing 8mm screw and detaching 3 tabs.

STEP 4: Transfer plastic speed nuts from factory corner splitters to 3D Design front lip.

STEP 5: Apply ~15" of supplied adhesive tape to the center portion of the 3D Design front lip and create pull tabs at each end.

STEP 6: Fit 3D Design Lip to bumper cover by pressing in 3 tabs on each end and fasten 8mm screws; be sure that adhesive tape pull tabs are accessible beneath front grille.

STEP 7: Re-attach 4 tabs on inner support panels and re-secure 2x 8mm screws

STEP 8: Pull off adhesive tape backing and press lip firmly to bumper.

STEP 9: Locate 4x small holes on underside of lip and carefully use 5/32" bit to drill holes into bottom of bumper cover.

STEP 10: The new holes should be just large enough to screw in included phillips-head screws. After placing screws, use 7mm open-end wrench to secure included nuts to screws.

STEP 11: The 3D Design Lip is now secured to bumper cover, complete install by re-attaching bumper cover to car. Installation is reverse of removal.

This looks like the perfect combination of the M performance lip and the RSC lip in one. 3D designs once again delivers a stunning product.

If I didn't love how aggressive the Vorsteiner lip matched the Vorsteiner front grille, I'd have happily purchased the 3d design lip.

Agreed with above - it's a perfect blend of RSC and M Performance, so if you're struggling to choose between those two - get the 3d design!

I WISH they made it in abs. I just want it body color and hope it is half the price of CF.

I agree, this design would look great body colored.

Maybe there will be a “replica” version that is inexpensive enough to paint? Based on the MPerf replicas they should be somewhere under half the original price, problem is, this is an expensive splitter to start! Haha

Love the understated look of this lip.
Pretty similar to what the MP lip offers but with more depth down low.
Thanks for the detailed installation instructions.

I know that this is a stupid question but I’m pretty ignorant about these things. Can the lip handle this vehicles TopSpeed of 180mph+? I imagine it would be a violent experience if the thing ripped off at that speed.

It’s bolted onto the bumper so yes it should be fine. But is it really necessary to do something like that?

Good point. I guess it’s not necessary but I just think it would look cool. I’m doing the carbon fiber rockers on the side so I thought the front might look nice in carbon fiber also.

I’m going to assume (and we all know how that goes!) that the reference was to doing 180mph, not the lip itself, especially given how nice this one looks.

It should be fine up to any reasonable speed you can actually achieve on a public road if installed correctly. No idea about track use, but as mentioned it is attached with adhesive and bolts that are through the bumper with a nut on the inside.

No, he could not of been asking that because that would be a remarkably silly question. That would be akin to you wife asking you if it was really necessary to see her breasts while fooling around. No one would ask a question like that here. Not in a serious manner anyway. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt that he wouldn’t come to a BMW car froum and attempt to lecture members about speeding in BMWs.

It’s only fair.

Now let’s address my question please. Are you telling me the lip could handle 180 mph? That’s how fast the car can go. Actually it can go faster than that but it’s locked past 180 mph. Is the lip rated for that or not?

Why wouldn’t it be? How does government even know how to make the front lip on any car legal or illegal?

Oh if only you knew how nice you have it in the US...

If I put that lip on my G80 and drive around, it's impound city for me.

Why?
What I mean is why would it be illegal? What is the logic behind that? It’s a genuine question.

All in the name of "safety". There are rules and limitations to how far a part can stick out of a car etc etc.

It can be made legal, that however means crashing several lips in front impact testing, material testing, and pedestrian crash testing. Given the somewhat small market, that makes no financial sense, as a 3D Design lip retails for like 2k$.

I'm not sure I can comment on the "logic" of it all, as often times, there just is none.

The above goes for any aftermarket addon part btw.

I do like how they incorporated the side pieces making it one piece unlike the Mperformance that's 3 pieces.
