Thoughts on asking dealer to change gearbox oil at break-in service?

I thought there could be some metal shavings there too, and maybe it could help with the 2nd gear grind? Or maybe take away the shavings from the grind?

Too much IMO.

OK. remember that in a MT the gears are always engaged, and you don't put extra wear on them by mis-shifting.

You are actually grinding your dogs (synchros), which are built to take that abuse, within reason. But if you manage to damage them, you'll usually feel that in thier takeup. And then yes, you'll need to get repairs and transmission fluid will be part of that.

Transmissions pans are designed to collect and tolerate fine metal shavings from wear and tear, and sometimes (or usually?) have magnet pickups, so you can stick to recommended servicing.

Unless you are doing hard racing, that always changes the rules for all consumables.

Cool, yes, no hard racing here, just a mild grind once that ended up in gear engagement anyway. We were discussing it in another thread. Nothing crazy, and I think we need to be gentler with it as it’s not designed to take hard shifts.

Will do a gearbox oil change with more miles then.

Interesting… so maybe theyre just saving money now. Wonder how much it’d cost… about 1 hour labour maybe?

Whatever it is, I'm so disinterested in going back to my dealer even for free service I'm doing it all myself over the winter. Replacing all with liquid moly.

pretty easy DIY, two bolts, two bottles, and a pump.

Up to you. As long as you're paying for the service the dealer should accommodate you.

However, the 2nd gear grind is not likely to be cured with a transmission fluid change.

With another brand of car a grind-y shifting transmission was *cured* by a brake and clutch hydraulic fluid flush/bleed. The clutch hydraulic system shared fluid with the brake system and the brake fluid deteriorated over time (~2.5 years). The fluid service also addressed a grabby clutch. The compromised clutch action was the reason for the grind-y shifting.

While your car is not old enough to have suffered from brake fluid/clutch hydraulic fluid degradation there is the possibility the clutch hydraulic system could benefit from a flush/bleed.

I had two vehicles: A 2018 MINI JCW and a 2020 M-B cargo van; that both manifested what proved to be brake fluid related issues well before even 2 years had elapsed after buying both new. Both vehicles were treated to a brake fluid flush/bleed (at my expense) and the issues were no more.

Bear in mind I offer the above without knowing if the M2 clutch hydraulic fluid service is even possible. But if it is I'd seriously consider having it done rather than an early -- well, this early -- transmission fluid service
