X5 m50i Oil change using

Is it possible to use a mittyvac on a X5 m50i? I haven’t checked, but apparently the N63TU3 still has a dipstick. If this is the case then It should work correct? I’d love to change the oil every 3-4K or sooner with no mess and only 15-20min time max. Used to do this for my Mercedes changing the oil every 3-4K miles and complete oil and filter with dealer every 10k interval. I’ve heard with BMW V8s it’s a necessity due to valve stems etc and oil leaks later. Never had a drop leak from my previous car and hope to do the same with this one.

I have not tried but don't see why it wouldn't work. But you still have to crawl underneath to change the filter so not sure it saves you that much time would it?

I would only change the oil to keep it fresh and have the filter changed at every oil service with the dealership every 7-10k miles.

There is a dipstick on the N63, located next to the oil filler cap. It's a black flat topped device, not yellow with a pull ring, and is easily missed unless you're looking for it.

I just completed my first oil change, and about a pint of oil remains in the oil filter canister, after draining via the sump drain plug. Even with all the oil drained from the bottom, I found 10.5 quarts brought the dipstick and dashboard indicator up to max (engine capacity is spec'd at 11.1 qts.). If you plan on extracting oil via the dipstick tube, you might find the oil canister doesn't empty, so be sure to check the oil level after 9.5 qts. so you don't overfill. Also, clean oil is extremely difficult to see on the red plastic dipstick tip (never had this problem with the flat metal dipsticks).

Let us know how it goes.

Just changed the oil using a mittyvac and this is the oil after 3500 miles. Is it like this due to the 0w-30 oil they use at the dealer? My oil never looked like this after 3500 miles in my Mercedes. Should I swap to a Mobil 0w-40 or the Castrol 5w-40? Also has what sounds like a timing chain tensioner or decompressed tappets upon start up.

That looks fine, oil detergents are doing their job. Change the oil every 5K miles.

Thanks I’m not used to seeing my oil almost black after low mileage changes and freaked me out. I was looking and researching all the different oils approved for BMW, but was wondering if it’s a true beneficial oil or a formula for EPA compliance. It has a loud metallic rattle at start up (1-2 seconds) and has me wondering if the oil is too thin that it drains out of of the tensioner or tappets while sitting.

You didn't mention if your MB was a turbo or not. Turbo -> change oil every 5K miles. This person did not-

Yeah I’m definitely going to look into a thicker oil and change around 3k miles on this m50i platform. I had an E550 coupe which has the m278 biturbo v8 engine (basically a smaller bore (4.7 vs 5.5) m157 AMG engine and smaller turbos). Even with a stage 2 tune it was bullet proof and never leaked or consumed oil. I’m hoping I’ll get at least 80k-100k miles with the x5 m50i with proper maintenance and care. The dark oil wasn’t encouraging haha. I bought new (2022) and currently have 13.8k miles on it and already have metallic rattles so it made me think the oil is too think not keeping proper compression in the tappets or tensioner. If that’s the case it could lead to excessive lobe wear on the camshafts and tappets.
