My Car Photography page - in Progress :)

So I went to a recent local BMW car show and took some pics.

I know composition could be much improved but given the way the cars were parked it was difficult to get a good background.

Please give me your harshest criticism to improve. Thank you in advanced.

Crouch - a good portion of your photos are from a standing position.

Standing is a big no-no when taking photos.

Everything is too tight/close, car show pictures are never good for photos. Ease off on clarity or highlights, it all looks like snapshots.

You are right! I did overdo it on the clarity and highlights, but at the time of "fixing" or editing the photos it looked better and cleaner... I am not good at post production of photos so I know I the need to practice more.

The photos of the show are nice. Which programs are you using to edit them, and what kind of editing do you do?

At the moment I am using Canon's editing program that came with the camera.
I a trying to get familarized with Photoshop CC and Lightroom ( I have 3 months free trial ) but I can't seem to get the hang of it.

You guys notice how the left side of this photo is out of focus and the right is clear?

What would cause this?

Yeah I was going to mention that too. Post production just comes from practice. I tend to go for a more natural and true to life style in my editing, so feel free to scroll through some of my stuff for ideas on that.

I never used the Canon software. I first started using Google's free Picasa software before moving over the Photoshop.

The best advice I can give there is start with basic things, sliders for contrast, fill light, saturation, etc are all available. But be wary, dont change any of them too drastically. Lest you get an unnatural (and to me unflattering) image.

When you process the raw files, try to remember what the scenes looked like when you were there and aim to replicate. Once you get there, you can play around with enhancing the image.

The best software that came with your 70D is Digital Photo Professional. You should shoot in RAW and use DPP to convert to JPG, adjusting Contrast, Shadows and Highlights as you do so. In DPP, activate Digital Lens Optimization for the lenses that you're using and it'll correct for geometric distortion, chromatic aberration, vignetting, etc., at every focal length and every aperture. LR has lens correction, similar to, but not as powerful as Canon's, but Canon's is limited to Canon equipment. DxO Optics Pro is also another great solution for RAW conversion.

Vary your perspective much more. You were in a shitty location for backgrounds, so closing in tight, like you did, is a good strategy, but you've got to get lower. Vary your focal length, from very wide, to very long.

Awesome, thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, I am no photography expert, so I wouldn't be able to help with the critiquing. But where are you located? I am in Northern, NJ as well and would love to attend shows like this! Was this the Rallye BMW show in Long Island?

You likely shot at a large aperture causing a narrow depth of field (DOF) which is also dependent on your focal length. Use a higher F stop (smaller aperture) to increase DOF.

Sure! There are a couple of X3 members meeting up in Fort Lee, NJ this afternoon around 5PM to go to a drag race meet if your into that.
There is a thread on this in the X5 forum.

I took some photos today with my Canon 70D to show off my recently installed M Performance front Spoiler lip.

I've been noticing a strange phenomenal with my camera or lens.
You guys notice that most of my shots are blurry on the left side of every photo?
