Panasonic GF1 Micro 4/3 camera for casual photography - I use only a 20mm f/1.7 lens (40mm equivalent)
Nikon D90 with 18-105mm and Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, SB600 flash Nikon D300 and D3X with a multitude of lenses

Switched to Nikon from Canon and have been shooting with a D700 w/ 17-35mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, and 70-200mm 2.8 VR
I would have to say that I liked the Canon gear but I think the Nikon stuff is a notch above. You pay a little more for the Nikon stuff but I think you get better quality. I don't care for video though. If you want video then go with Canon, if not then go with Nikon.

Nikon D5000 here. Great and user-friendly camera for beginners. I'm hoping Nikon would come up with a D90 replacement soon, so I can upgrade. You could also look for Canon T2i which is also very good.
