BIMMERPOST NEWSDiesel 7 Series Reportedly Coming Stateside Next Year. Springs Hope for 335d / 535d BMW recently revealed the 2013 7 Series LCI / facelift refresh model [official thread]. Along with the newly updated looks and technology (the most important of which is the Navigation Pro system), the US is also set to receive a diesel 7 Series model sometime next year, according to C&D. It will be powered by the same 3.0 liter diesel inline 6-cylinder engine from the X5 xDrive35d. Actual output for the 7 Series application isn't yet known, but the standard configuration of this engine currently produces 265hp and 425 lb-ft torque, with an available high output version outputting 308hp / 465 lb-ft torque. It should be badged as either the 735d or 740d. This is a good sign for 3 Series and 5 Series fans hoping for a diesel model, which, if offered in the US with the same engine as next year's 7 series and X5 xDrive35d, would come in the form of the 335d and 535d. When we last asked BMWNA about a possible F30 diesel for the U.S., their response was "our last outgoing model [e90] was very successful with the diesel so we’re thinking about it." PLEASE give us here in the US another 335d BMW!
With proper promotion it will sell more than the previous 335d and with any luck put a whole new engine in it. (Or add HP to the existing torque filled engine) |

Makes sense. Audi has a diesel A8 (or are bringing one) and Mercedes has a diesel S-class. I'm surprised it's taken them this long. Hopefully we'll get x-drive versions of all of these though, then they'll really be successful.

I knew it! BMW is all about surprises. I really love my 335d and am reminded of how special it is each time I drive it. All I can say is, "it's about damn time!". Nothing against gas cars (the V8 M3 is a beast) but a diesel engine is something special also. Once US tuners get their hands dirty and figure out how to tune these monster engines like they do in Europe, we are all in for a real treat. Stay tuned!

There's no way they're using the current M57 from the E70 US X5 in the 7er. Hopefully this means they're finally federalizing the N57. The M57 never had a 308 hp variant either, that's the current N57.

How do you figure? BMW is last out of the German three to come out with a diesel variant of their most expensive model. If Audi and Mercedes continue to have diesel variants, that means there has to be market. I'm just surprised it took this long. I want to know what stats BMWNA is looking at that makes them hesitant in bringing diesel cars to North America.

this is just a reactionn to mb/audi, they want to stay in the game stateside. i don't think this translates to rolling out a 535d, 335d. they'll stick to the active hybrids and test that out first.
it better be the uprated 40d guise, not the same 35d guise that we had on the e90.

The new F-30/31 with a 2 liter diesel would bring in new customers, as it could touch 40 to 50 mpg with decent acceleration. Since BMW has taken the plunge with a 4 cylinder gasoline engine, the "bigger is better" crowd here in the USA has already had time to get used to the idea.
BTW, I saw my first F30 yesterday in traffic. At first I thought it was a 5 series from behind, as it was so big. Nice car, but I'm glad I have an E90 just same.
