Everyone's opinion is going to be different, ownership duration for the 7th series is a sticky point.
I personally keep cars for relatively long time. Those that I like stay for 20+ years with me. So far I like my 760...

Just an FYI that can easily be overlooked by new BMW owners/buyers...BMW doesn't make a V6 engine. BMW is known historically for their smooth inline 6 cylinder engines (no "V").
No "V"...the 6 cylinders are all inline:

I normally change cars every 3 to 4 years, so broadly at about 40k miles - some a bit longer, some a bit shorter.
However, the lockdown and probable change to working life going forward, ie. only likely to go into the office 2 or 3 times per month after this, and very few supplier visits (due to Teams) - when we eventually get back to normal. After week 3 of working at home, I am now quite enjoying it and in a routine. Since the end of March, I have averaged 12 miles per month, so even if I do 3,000 miles a year, that is very different from my current 14,000 miles a year. So on that basis, it is going to be very difficult to justify spending lots of money on a car to just sit in the drive, so I may just decide to keep this one for quite some time. I always buy outright, and do not lease etc, so it is just the depreciation hit, which if I keep for longer doesn’t really matter any more

I bought a 2016 750i in August last year with 54k miles. Intent is to keep for around 5-6 years. My typical mileage is about 18-20k per year but this year is way down due to pandemic. This may push me to keep longer.
Also, my wife has an SUV which we now take on longer road trips to haul all the kid stuff. Most of it can fit in the 7 but not with a stroller/Veer wagon as well. I would do a roof rack but there isn't an integrated system for mine I think because of panoramic glass. I don't want some cheesy looking 3rd party rack that could possibly scratch the paint. I digress... So for what it is worth, I bought the big V8 and I intend to keep it a while. I am heartened by the fact that the CCP was done right before I purchased and many of the reliability issues of the N63 have supposedly been addressed. I love the car and have had no issues. I have not driven the 740 but I suspect it would feel very underpowered to me based on what I'm used to. I have driven both the 6 and 8 cylinder in the X7 and the 8 is far superior in my opinion. |

Got my 740x M last october after years of S classes, few AMGs and 4 SUVs. I do around 12k/year office/meetings/work abroad and that depends. I have a work car too so keeping a personal car for longer it's a financial loss. I change my cars every 1 ½ years. With current times and working from home not worth investing in an expensive car. A good E46 will set you back £3-5k for UK drive but you drive in Europe then Euro6 is a must!
Various factors to be taken into account. In USA a v8 is perfect life as a daily driver. My brother had lived in NY for 28 yrs and he's always had v8s. |

My 2018 B7 is turning 2 years in July. I love the car and plan on keeping it for another two years.

Tend to buy approved used cars around 1 to 2 years old, pay them off completely and then keep them until they are just over 100k miles (company car allowance rules unfortunately)...For me, that usually means buying with 20-40k miles on them and then selling them when they are around 5 or 6 years old (whenever it gets to 100k miles for me)...at which time the newer models are a decent price but as someone else posted...it will depend greatly on what your own reasons for owning a 7 are...as a business car or profession, a new car is important or a perk and miles are racked up quickly...as a private car with 12k or less miles per year...one could have it a very long time if the desire to have the newest and latest doesn't apply.
Safe travels.
