Drivetrain malfunction
I was accelerating and this drivetrain malfunction came up and the car was shaking and there was reduced power. After switching it on and off twice the message remained but then after pushing the car in manual modes it went away and the car was perfectly fine and I accelerated it extensively. Then after I got out to my destination and came back everything was fine. I pushed the car multiple times and nothing. However I could feel a slight shaking at acceleration. Then the dreaded warning light came back on and I decided to just leave the car and drive home at 60mph with no pressure on it. When I got home I switched it on and off after 5 minutes to try to reset it but it remained. Then after around 10 minutes of normal driving it went away and that’s where I’m at now. I’ve asked for a call from bmw to get it serviced but I was wondering if anyone has any idea what this is due to? The car has only done 13,000 miles it is a MY16 and all services have been carried out at bmw.
Thanks in advance much appreciated Last edited by 740I_yeye; 12-22-2019 at 03:41 PM.. |

Too many variables and we could be guessing what the issue is. Could easily be a misfire, bad gas, bad spark plugs especially if you're feeling some hesitation.

From google, best way to explain the diff DTC codes. Pending Codes A pending code will not turn on your check engine light and indicates that a system on your vehicle is behaving abnormally, but not so much as to mean there is an actual problem. For example a temperature sensor might have a normal operating range of 90-110 degrees, but 80-120 degrees is considered acceptable. Once the sensor starts to read 85 degrees it is outside of the "normal" range but isn't a problem yet, so a pending code will appear. Confirmed Codes A confirmed code indicates that a vehicle system is experiencing an issue requiring your attention. In the temperature sensor example above, once the reading drops below 80 or above 120 degrees the vehicle would then throw a confirmed code as well. Permanent Codes Permanent codes are a special type introduced more recently which can not be cleared using a scan tool. If you have a permanent code the vehicle will clear it itself once the cause has been addressed and sufficient data has been gathered by driving under different conditions (idling, stop and go, highway) Generally permanent codes cover emissions related equipment.

Happened to me about a month ago. Dealer replaced two ignition coils.

Really weird... so the vehicle is in for service and bmw found no fault codes to diagnose in the history. They said they’ll investigate it further on Monday, as well as updating the software to ID6 I presume as the guy said, because it kept rebooting on me.

Could be anything like a malfunctioning MAF or oxygen sensor. Faulty VANOS as well. It is a guess until your BMW garage can plug in the car and view the stored fault codes.

What color do the exhaust pipes have? Mine were dirty(black). The good thing was that it was warranty of BMW. My problem was that something else than just air came in the cylinder( a poor combustion in the cylinder , so you should think there was a turbo"thing"... Different new parts on it and a couple weeks later I got my car back in "perfect shape" I don't think you can solve it by a OBD reset or something... just go to the dealer! Good luck👍 |

Just to update this post in case anyone may be having the same problem. I finally got the car booked in last week and the problem turned out to be a faulty spark plug.... this was very weird to me as the spark plugs were changed 2 weeks before I got the car and the problem started just a week after I got the car... however I’ve been driving the car for a week now and it does feel a lot smoother in general and just a lot more active, especially in comfort... hopefully that’s sorted. Btw (I bought the car back in December so not too long ago). Once again thanks for everybody’s help.

Glad to hear your car was fixed. I got this code yesterday and first thing I thought was spark plugs and coil packs. Car has about 60k on it and since I bought it at 37k miles, I have no idea what was done. I was thinking about changing out the sparkplugs and coil packs myself. The other thing I heard someone mention on youtube was battery but I doubt a faulty battery kicks in the draintrain malfunction light while driving.

Mine had the same message before the lockdown. Bmw dealer useless as anticipated!
Mine had a cracked propshaft joint coupler. Changed both of them and then claimed it back from BMW. Then issue gone. No issues ever since. |

So you had an independent fix it? Then bmw paid for it? Never heard that was possible. Thanks

after massive arguments with their crap Service manager. I booked it in for a oil/filter change under Service Pack included and they replaced the air filters only. Idiots! And they said I am booked for the prop shafts sometimes in sept with no replacement car. I said hell no! You messed up the service you fix it otherwise I claim it back from your HO. They sent me to an approved Service where I had to pay £524.16- cheque was sent back after 3 months. Bmw Sidcup SE London - I will never go again !
