Professional Assistance Driver
The sensitivity of the new professional assistance driving package is way too sensitive. This package is supposed to let you take your hands off the steering wheel, and it will continue to drive itself. However, I can't even take a drink without getting the distracted driver warning. It used to be much less sensitive, and now it has gone to the extreme.

It doesn’t like when you pick your nose either! And don’t even try to yawn.

But seriously, BMW certainly wants to err on the side of caution and not be blamed for an accident due to inattentiveness. But at some point the level of restriction can certainly negate the featured convenience. |

I can't get it to work right either. I think the steering wheel top is blocking the camera that is used to see your eyes to make sure you aren't distracted. It just beeps and then it turns off. It is more relaxing to use regular distance CC. If there is an adjustment, I can't find it.

There are three camera. That's one and there is also one on either side of the screen. You can see them all when you have your camera on it.

I'm going to have to readjust my steering wheel position - but I will wait until after the active lane change update.

Otherwise, yes, one can only look away for maybe 1.5 to 2 seconds before the distracted driver warning occurs. It would be a mistake to make a length-of-time setting adjustable. Folks would probably set it to 4-5 seconds resulting in a sizeable increase in accidents and BMW would find themselves defendants in multiple lawsuits. The length of time right now DOES feel a bit stingy, but honestly, it's probably at or near optimal. |

Not cameras. You can watch any videos about the driver camera system and some of them even show what the camera sees and how it tracks your eyes and facial structure to know which direction you are looking in. On iDrive 7 cars the Driver Camera System was in the same place and was the only additional part on the instrument cluster installed for Driver Assistant Professional. They are likely just infrared lights to illuminate your face at night. You can see these same lights on the gesture control camera used to illuminate the area where you would use gesture controls.

Thanks Dromike I’ll look for the film when I get back to it tomorrow.

The film is off. I believe it is my driving position via a vis the camera. I’ll have to do some experimenting.

Hmm, the camera at the top of the instrument cluster is hard to obliterate with the steering wheel; and once I removed the film, all worked like magic. If you're not getting, or have never received, the full experience of hands-free freeway/highway driving after that -- a big reason I paid the premium price -- you should take it in on warranty.

I use mine all the time and am still wowed by it. I do feel a little frozen or robotic staring ahead worrying I’ll piss it off if not compliant but maybe it’ll get a software update to loosen the parameters soon.
