Going from '23 xDrive60 to '26 xDrive60 with auto doors

My lease is up in September but my SA is trying to get me into a verrrry nice 2026. This spec is a hair over $140k with Matte Dark Grey paint and the usual stuff — M Sport, M Sport Pro, Parking, Exec, etc…

My question is really about the auto doors. Who has them and what has been your experience with them? Novelty and fun for the first week or are you still using them? Downsides? I can honestly see getting very used to them but I wonder if passengers will be completely flummoxed and I’ll spend more time explaining them than just pretending they’re not there….

Thoughts?

Absolutely love them. Must have imho. As mentioned above, only time I touch the door handle is to open it when walking up to the car.

I'm looking to replace my 2023 760 as well. Looking at both 2027 S580 and 760. One big point against the S580, for me, is the lack of automatic doors (the Maybach has them so surprised they didn't trickle down to the standard S in the refresh)

If I must choose one technology feature that I consider a “must have” and would hate it if the car doesn’t have it: it’s the automatic door.

They are absolutely the best and most practical “actually needed” option after the highway hands-free drive assist.

Without these two options I would not be in this car if another one offers them. I think without exaggeration I’d also pay up to $6k for this feature (I know they cost less).

The door automatically opens, u jump to ur seat, press the brake and they automatically close. You then add a shortcut on the screen to open the wife or kids seats and close them with one touch. My kids do NOT need them but love them. But to me as as the owner i actually feel now that I “need” them after experiencing them.

100% get them.

Also for the luxury sedans am a true believer that they should always be fully loaded to get the full and best experience. So many nice-to-have that suddenly become extraordinarily convenient and more than just “nice to have”.

This is a must-have feature. I love automatic doors. People often stare as the doors open on their own.
When I get into the M8, I try to press the brake pedal to close the doors, but unfortunately, this isn't a 7 Series.

Would not by a 7 series without the auto doors.

I would also look for this feature in my next 7. In 7 the doors are long and it’s very difficult for an average or short passenger/driver to reach the door once inside to pull it shut. It’s quite a stretch. Hence this is not luxury anymore, it is a necessity.

I have also seen this in Cadillac Escalade and it’s a true wow/bling.

First off, again, I am again completely impressed from another one of BMW5and7's thought-provoking and enriching responses. It goes without saying that I agree entirely and wholeheartedly.

As for MY thoughts/response -- Yes, the auto doors are a must have for not only you, but for the luxury of a G70 automobile. It'd be like -- I can only assume -- opting for a penthouse suite without a view! But in real terms, just closing the door with the brake pedal is worth its weight in gold to me. Like my old Chrysler, it's a long way to reach if opened all the way. Also, your passengers -- especially with packages or in the rain would really appreciate it. BTW, I didn't think about making an on-screen shortcut (good idea 5 & Dime, er, 7)!

Further, both your insurance company and your car’s pristine finish will appreciate that these auto-opening doors have their own 'eyes.' While a person might haphazardly fling a door open into a post or another vehicle, the i7 uses a network of ultrasonic sensors for active obstacle detection. It essentially scans the area in real-time to calculate a safe opening path, ensuring you never have to deal with the heartbreak of a door-ding. It’s not just a luxury; it’s a built-in sentry for your car’s exterior.

Ultimately, it would seem completely confounding to acquire such a nice vehicle and leave out this absolutely unique, practical and even fun feature.

I wouldn't have it without them. I have small kids and they absolutely love the doors. My daughter doesn't have the strength to open the door on our Escalade, nevermind our G Wagen, but with the auto doors on the I7 she can open and close doors and she pleases.

I have them and never touch the door handle at all.
I never close the door by hand - but with the brake pedal.
I never open the door by hand - but the digital key in my phone opens the door automatically when I'm approaching.

Really only use of the door handle is when parked at the side of a busy street and the sensors don't open the door automatically.

Never without!

I use them quite often. Makes things easier when cleaning the vehicle as well. I also love them because I can tell my son not to put his finger prints all over the door when he gets out!! LOL

those doors are fantastic! i wouldn't want to miss them

also the close function when stepping on the brake, don't forget that one.

and yes: for non-frequent passengers, this can be confusing.

Don’t forget the idiotic “pop-out” door handles on the MB. You haven’t lived until you are trying to get your door open and the handle refuses to pop out, while some guy in a G70 is waiting for your parking space.

I have the automatic doors in my I7 and absolutely love them. Any comparative luxury sedan without them seems woefully pedestrian. Just knowing that your door isn’t going to accidentally slam into the car next to you is really great. I don’t ever want another car without them.
