ESS F8X M3/M4 Stage 1 Performance Tune Dyno

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
We have just finished testing on our stage 1 F8X performance tuner. Our goal with this controller was to offer a product for this platform that was easy to install, delivered solid gains on pump fuel and provided OEM level driveability. Our new E-Tronic controller delivers. With state of the art hardware and top notch processing power that includes Cam, MAP and MAF sensor integration our unit provides precise and reliable control over the factory ECU. On the road the car drives as if it came from direct from BMW with the added power. Easy to install and easy to remove if needed it allows the owner to retain factory warranty and return the car to stock at anytime.

Stage 1 is designed for pump fuel and adds + 60-70 CHP / 60-70 TQ over stock depending on fuel quality. Testing was done on a 100% stock M4 running 91 octane fuel.

At the request of some we built a second file "red run" which runs close to factory boost in the mid range and slowly increases it as RPM's raise to reproduce a more linear feel to the power curve. This option is available by request.

CHP = Corrected HP? At first I thought you meant crank but the dyno doesn't show that

Wow very nice looking graph Roman.

Is this an OBD flash or a piggy?

Same question. My guess is piggy, since he refers to install and removal for warranty work.

Solid gains here! Can you talk to us about what the installation entails and what exactly the hardware is?

Also, can you post the boost curve?

This is a piggyback controller. Like others it only requires very simple connections in the engine bay.

There currently is no access to the factory ECU. This is why you have seen thread after thread from people claiming to have tuned the ECU go silent. Until there is true access to tune the factory ECU thru OBD the only option for customers to add real power to the F8X is a piggyback system. Coming to terms with this reality and knowing it could be some time until we can program the ECU we wanted to provide our customers with the highest quality controller we could.

Here is the same graph with boost data added Clark_Kent.

The HP curve looks good. It doesn't fall off much towards redline. Very important. Intrigued. Can't get ahead of myself. Must break in first!

Here is what I don't understand based on comments I have seen. If the stock turbo's are really maxed out due to size in terms of top-end power stock and things like the jb4 really only seems to bump midrange, how is this able to create the same curve as stock (almost) with the turbo size being so small? I would think the stock turbo's are too small to add almost 50hp up top at 7k-7500k rpm?

I don't understand piggy back systems clearly but this to me would indicate that you could indeed tune the car for more power especially in the 6500-7500 range while perhaps less increase in the mid-range if one wanted a "NA-like tune" Still overall gain in power and performance with a more linear power curve at the expense of lower overall increase.

I am guessing a piggy back does not have the ability to manipulation the curve at each RPM however

you are missing the fact that is this a new era of M engines. People here like there low end, and mid range power. So there trip into town seems more fun on the streets.

the days of radical race engines with linear power are over for BMW. You are not going to see a lot of people trying to make a N/A feel from a trubo engine.

It seems like you could be waiting quite some time. Just ask the IS-F guys, they are still waiting for someone to crack their ecu.

Now another prominent flash tuner is going the piggy route. That is 4 piggybacks I count now for the M3/M4.

They may never crack it

But, the isf market is a lot smaller than the Bmw m3 market, and many more gains are possible with a turbo vs n/a.

Where there is money, there is motivation.

I also would prefer a tune profile that begins adding power from about 5k on up.
