I'm not Christian....identify more agnostic....but I want to teach my very young children that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ(which is the reason for Christmas) and a time of year of sacrifice and giving to others.
I've never understood the expectation that everyone deserves a gift from friends and relatives on December 25. Birthdays.....I have no problem with respect to gift giving.

It's the celebration of Jesus Christ's birth. To us Christians son of God sent to save the world, in essence beginning of Christianity as a faith. So I would say not overrated at all. It's the most important holiday of all. We Christians of course glorify him everyday not just on Christmas.
If your question is in regards to gifts and material aspects of it, yes our society tends to use all sorts of ways to profit from a certain event or celebration. Which doesn't bother me personally, as it doesn't take away to me from the true meaning of Christmas. What bothers me is those that get offended by a mention of Merry Christmas. |

For Christians, it is a significant holiday that has nothing to do with shopping / gift giving. It's also an opportunity to spend time with family, reflect on the last year and look forward to the next, whether one is religious or not.

My family celebrates xmas, although I'm not christian and personally could not care less about the birth of jesus. However we have always celebrated it so we continue to do so out of tradition more than anything else. Any reason to get together over food and booze is fine with me. Although we have our get together on the 24th. The 25th is just the day kids get gifts and you visit relatives that couldn't come to the party on the 24th.
As for the whole gift giving I think it's a huge waste of time and money. For kids fine, but gift giving among adults is just stupid. The only xmas gift I want is either a Ferrari or to not have to waste my time having to go to the damn store to pick out random crap that I have no idea if anyone will like and in exchange get some random crap I probably don't want or need. How about everyone who wants a gift go buy a damn gift for themselves . |

Scholars claim that it is HIGHLY unlikely that JC was born Dec 25, more likely in the Fall sometime in the years between 6 and 4 BC.
Someone in history (the church?) adopted Dec 25 as JC's birthdate as it was already a pagan festival day for the re-birth of the sun.

Yes, there are many things to question within the entire story as presented by the "church of the time". Those that have "faith" believe blindly, the rest of us will need a lot of convincing. A age-old argument.............

I love the cooking and walking through the cemetery at night! I can't stand the Christmas music at all and as always, the thought of going shopping gets my blood boiling.

Love Christmas, and it's always a bit sad when Christmas is over, all the decorations are taken down and it's back to normal. Pity.

Christmas for me is a bit of a chor, food shopping with the shops full of people & long queues at the check outs, having to buy gifts for people you don't really like, having to see inlaws that you really don't like & for what? The 25th December isn't even the real date of Jesus the carpenter whom used cannabis to heal peoples birthday.
Christmas was actually a pagan festivile celebrated around the winter solstice. Bah humbug & Merry Christmas one & all
