730D B57 Engine Tuning
Hi all,
Long time lurking in the background with a few comments here and there. Spent the last 6 months convincing myself that a G11 7 series was the way forward and as luck would have it a car accident that saw my previous 330i written off has just forced my hand...!! I did want to go down the 740D route but have been negotiating with a dealer near London over a substantially specc'd 730D - as my heart wasn't really into the 30D I decided to see how far I could push him, only to find it was very far indeed!! Long story short, it's now an exceptionally good deal that I cannot ignore in favour of a 40D and am likely to pull the trigger on it (just negotiating over last little bits). Question I have is, what are the options when it comes to engine tuning? From the engine code, it looks like the 730D shares the same b57b30o0 lump as the G30 530D in which case there looks to be some reasonable plug and play tuning boxes turning out reasonable returns. Am I missing something? It all feels a bit too easy - what have I missed?? |

I wouldn't worry about the 740d over the 730d if you're getting the Sdrive version the 730d for me is a better car, feels a lot lighter (it is) and the engine feels sharper as well, in the heavier 740d xdrive the power builds progressively which is fine but the 730d feels much more alert round town and over the first 40mph.
I say this as a 740d driver who had a 730d for 5 weeks whilst the 740d was in for repairs, I've been looking at the LCI 7 and I'd get a Sdrive 730d it's the sweet spot of the diesels IMHO. On the mapping front the engine is shared across the G chassis 30d's (3/X3/5/X5 etc...) so should be easy to find a tuning box not sure there is a remap available though but I could be wrong.

It’s a great model, I would say that though
Race chip is likely most popular, but there are others from AC Schnitzer and more... Hope you enjoy it whatever you decide. Safe travels. |

Thanks for the responses.
Have to admit I'm not that clued up when it comes to remapping/chip boxes. I've never owned a Diesel before, let alone tuned one!! |

If the deal is really good, then don’t worry as the difference in performance isn’t huge. I’d avoid any form of tuning whilst in warranty as they are not cheap cars to repair if something goes wrong, just enjoy wafting along.
I’ve got an LCI 740LD Xdrive at the moment while mine is getting a small paintwork repair and it feels heavier and a lot less sharp, some of that will be engine (it’s a lot slower and the throttle response isn’t great) but the shorter wheelbase and lighter weight will help. Styling aside (which I don’t like at all), there’s no noticeable difference between pre and post LCI in terms of ride comfort and refinement and if you carry passengers in the back then they’ll really appreciate the older car with standard comfort rear seats. It has confirmed what I thought when I bought my car, Executive Drive Pro is well worth the extra cost. |

Interesting that the general consensus is that there is little difference between a 730D and a 740D. Makes you wonder why BMW built them so similar in performance?

I test drove a 730d before ordering my 740d XDrive, and in Sport Mode, they are worlds apart, with the 740d having far more get up and go and acceleration, so not sure why others are not seeing this.
In Comfort / Eco mode they are broadly similar, as throttle response is dumbed down, so would agree that they are similar in that mode.

I do believe the 40d is twin turbo though no? If so, you’d miss that with doing any remap/chip with the 30d (and nothing else). I’m out of my warranty period now so seriously considering what I’ll do next...if prices of cars don’t go crazy in 2020 I’ll likely look to change the car, if the prices do go nuts then I’ll chip, put new alloys on, etc... |

In terms of tuning the twin turbo B57 in the 740d can be tuned for 380-400hp and that would make a difference pushing the ratio up to 200hp per tonne.

I feel I've convinced myself to go with the 730D due to the superior spec regardless. The fact that the performance isn't noticeably different is a good relief as wouldn't have wanted buyer regret after loving the way the 740D drove. Besides, a tuning box looks like it could sort out the gap in performance for fairly reasonable money. As I am a diesel noob - can anyone explain how do the tuning boxes work compared to a remap? |

Just did a remap on my 730d and all I can say woww... the car feels more alive and much more responaive. Had a stage 1 done around 320hp and 700nm torqe.
I did a remap by HC Performance as he did my M4 M6 in the past. |

If you're going the tuning box route I'd probably go with AC Schnitzer. Expensive but you get a warranty.
Otherwise remap. I have a 740Ld and also test drove a 730Ld. Complete agreement with Markr comments above. In Comfort/Eco (so round town or motorway cruising) there's little in it. Sport mode forget it as they are completely different animals. For me I was lucky that I found a highly spec'd 740Ld so got the best of both worlds. Whichever way you go though you won't be disappointed. With either standard car. Just remember though, the 40 has two turbos. |
