Car Drying Towels

Are they worth it? I blow dry my rig with a leaf blower, then wipe up the rest with those baby blankets from the hospital.

Baby blankets from the hospital? Lol. I use Chemical Guys Wooly Mammoth. Highly recommended, a bit pricey but one towel completely dries off our X5.

worth it to me, I use a variety but most are waffle weave. I used to blow dry first then finish up with towel but lately ive been toweling first then finishing with blow dry, it's actually quite a bit quicker. very careful not to scratch, lay the towel down then just pick it up.

Highly recommend a microfiber of some sort intended for the job and from a reputable company.

Cotton does actually scratch, even cotton stuff meant for babies. Don't use it if you care about scratches. They'll be really small but add up over time.

I’ve got 6 Chemical Guys Wooly Mammoth towels in rotation for my vehicles- they’re the best!

Wrong about what? Yours aren't cotton? Ours were. I no longer use cotton anything on the car. I learned that lesson. But go ahead and feel free.

If they're great, and I'm wrong, why the post?

I use leaf blower on my cars after washing them as well. That gets ~95% of the moisture off the cars.

On the cars that I care about, I follow-up with a plush microfiber car drying towel. I forgot which one, since I bought a few over the years. I think this is one of them.

On the cars I care less about, I just leave it at that.
I don't know what hospital blankets are made out of, but unless it's microfiber, I would avoid them as they may be introducing scratches to your clearcoat. Not a big deal, but not ideal.

I have noticed that many companies advertise that these waffle weave towels are better than the regular microfiber towels for drying the windows. I wonder if this is true or just advertising hype.

I've found them to be better. Less streaking, better absorption.

If they advertise that they are better, they must be better. After all they wouldn’t lie to us would they? .

I have only used the waffle towels so I can’t provide a comparison. They work well for me.

The best towel is no towel. I have zero tounch drying the car with the metrovac 8HP. Take a little longer than towel but result much more than any towel.

It is true.
Waffle weave are different in both the weave pattern and the density of the microfiber material. They do clean the glass much better.

Longer answer - microfiber is called that way because individual strands are less than one decitex in size (smaller than silk) which are grouped into bundles (yarns) and then woven into the desired cloth to give it desired characteristics. Microfiber is a blend of polyamide (absorbency) and polyester (strength and texture) and the exact ratio can vary based on your goals for the cloth.

Standard microfiber is loop style cloths that are woven with cross direction yarns are looped up, giving cloth the "fluffiness" and velcro feel on your rough hands. Waffle weaves are a more flat, 2 dimensional weaves that keeps strands of yarns tighter together, losing some absorbency in favor of smoother surface that works better to remove oils and films from smooth surfaces like glass.

I'm not super-obsessive on cleaning/drying, but have found waffle towels work really well.
I get the Meguire's kind and like 'em fine.

I had to search in my email archives to figure out what towels I own. I've been using the DI Microfiber Waffle Weave Drying Towels 36" x 24" exclusively since 2015 (across 5 cars). I have a total of 4 or 5 towels and even after 10 years they look brand new (washed with my other car wash products, wash mitt, etc. in regular detergent).

I do start with a leaf blower and try to minimize surface contact, and then typically just touch up with 1 waffle weave.

I tend to stick with products for a really long time (as long as they continue to perform), and I've never even thought I should try (or need to try) other drying towels.

Detailed Image used to be a bimmerpost sponsor and the founder Greg used to be a frequent poster, but looks like his account went quiet in 2018.
