Smile Protectant for headlights? Car Wax?

I just bought a 2018 X5 S3.5 with low miles. The prior owner took great care of the vehicle and it is like new. I only have a one car garage and I live in Florida. The headlights are perfect. Is there a wax or UV protectant that I can wipe on the headlights to avoid any future clouding?

I will probably pay a detailer but I am looking at Griot's 3 in 1 Ceramic Wax which has gotten great ratings by Project Farm guy on YT. Thanks.

I haven't used it, but WeatherTech (among others) has a protective film for headlights. There are also protective coatings, like this one from Sylvania. So far as I'm aware this is the same stuff that comes with headlight restoration kits. It definitely doesn't last forever, but so far the headlights I've used it on haven't clouded back up almost a year later.

Griot's 3‑in‑1 Ceramic Wax is really solid. It may not be the absolute best when it comes to water beading or keeping grime off the car, but its protection is among the best in the industry, especially for the price. It won’t prevent rock or sand chips, but it will absolutely protect against UV damage and provide an extra layer of defense against salt and other road chemicals.

unless it's xpel or another 3M PPF film for the headlights, be advised I've used other types on my old GTI and it caused micro cracking in the headlights themselves for some reason; repeatable process as other members of golfmk7 experienced the same thing.

A good spray on ceramic like Sonax would be a good in between wax and prof ceramic coating.

If you really want to protect the headlights that’s guaranteed to work, you want PPF. I have PPF on my headlights since 2019 and they look like brand new. No hazing at all.

On my last car, around year 4-5, I had to start light standing to get some of the haze off it. Tried a lot of sprays/sealants that were available and it help it a bit but I still had to wet sand it.

CarPro DLight is the best headlight coating I have used so far.

But like stated above, XPEL would be the way to go for more long term clarity

I need to check with my PPF installer to see if they did the headlights. I think they did, but if not I'm going to have him do it when I'm there next week for the post-install "checkup". I also want to see if he did the side reflectors – if not I have an overlay for them that makes them much darker, which I probably should've thought about before the installation, lol.

It's easy to see if there is clear PPF installed on the headlight lens. There'll be a slight/faint edge around the perimeter of the headlight lens.

I've been having clear PPF put on all of my vehicles. I had a 2019 C-HR that sat outside 24/7/365. The PPF was on it for years and still looked clear.

My 135i has it but it's garage kept and under a car cover. Obviously that one would look new.

My 2025 CX-5 has clear PPF on the headlights. I had the PPF installed about a week after buying the car.

To me clear PPF is the best solution to prevent hazing of headlight lenses.

There are TONs of product on the marketplace, most are placebos.
Feel to use them if it makes you feel good!

The oldest car in my fleet is my 2015 ///M3 (11/14 manufacturing date), so 11+ years old by now.
Zero PPF or custom care for the lenses on this car, or any of the others.
Zero headlight issues, clouding, hazing or anything of the kind.

Modern BMW headlight materials are head'nshoulders above the plastics that were used in the 90s. They don't discolor or cloud easily.

I do wipe on whatever ceramic coating the cars get annually (none of them last as long as advertised), so there is some inadvertent layer of protection on them, but nothing purposeful. I don't believe it makes any real difference, but applying it takes less effort than avoiding those areas when treating the rest of the car.

But feel free to spend as much money as you wish to make you feel good about "protection"!

HTH,
a
