I've never been to either but i want to send my sister and her husband there for 3 nights for their xmas presents. Anyone have experiences they would like to share. Tips on where to stay and what to do. Thanks.

Yeah I pretty much don't trust Mexico at all anymore. Too many unsafe areas for tourists (or just people in general, rather) given all the cartel violence. I wouldn't go there for free.

Unless, they are willing and able to bring along Kalashnikov......Mexico is dangerous IMHO.

Damm, even if they were stuck in the resorts.

Mexico is pretty sketchy anymore. I still go to Cabo every year though, so at least for that city I can say the good times outweigh the crime for the wife and I. If they are in a resort full time that could work. Parts of the Caribbean I have been to are dangerous as well.

If neither of them have been, Bahamas would be bets for a gift vacation.

stay away from Mexico at all costs.

my second home is in Monterrey Mexico - been going for more than 30 years.

85% of my family lives there....

I haven't been since Christmas 2009 though - i'll probably never go back.

I definitely won't drive either of my cars there - it's not worth the risk of being kidnapped or getting all your shit taken....

Both have really nice beaches. I'd go with the Bahamas though, i loved staying at the Atlantis resort. Small towns in Mexico are dangerous, not tourist busy cities like Cancun, Cabo, etc. Could never go wrong with Hawaii neither.

My sister has never been out of the country but she loves going to the beaches. I guess Mexico is out of the question and I've been leaning more towards the bahamas anyways because it's actually cheaper than Cabo or cancun.

Yeah, cheaper, safer and still great beaches.

Probably neither.

Mexico is not as bad as everyone says here. Most haven't been in the past 12 months…Some things have changed.

Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan are still tourist hotspots. Sonora Bay is nice too. Been there as well.

Are they hispanic or latino? if so it won't be that bad in reality.

Bahamas would be nice. Never been. I would probably name about 10 other just as nice places though.

yes it is.

I don't have to be in Mexico for the last 12 months to understand what it's like there.

I've lived in Mexico longer than you spent in high school....

4 uncles and 2 aunts still live there......

just don't go.......it ain't worth it......

I'm not going to chance being dug up in some shallow grave with 150 other chopped up motherfuckers 3 months after my death.....

I should've included a price range of about $1000.00 to $2000.00 total flight and hotel for 2. I've seen $2000 for an all inclusive resort in Cancun. Off Off-topic. Litos someone posted a video on Fb of these 2 mexican guys getting their head cut off by a chainsaw. Is that shit real?? I didn't watch it but I paused and scanned through it.

Things have changed alright. What's changed is cartel related violence has increased every year since 2009 and has spread to more areas. I'm on my phone now but I think if you just google Mexico cartel violence map there's a good bbc link (first or second link) that shows the trends.

unfortunately, everything you see from Mexico is real.

Cartels trying to send messages to other Cartel members.

example:

1. one gang was hanging out in a club
2. rival gang shows up
3. "somehow", the rival gang manages to lock all the doors to the club so everyone that was in there, civilians included, were stuck inside of the club
4. gangs start a firefight in the club
5. rival gang wins, killing more people than anticipated
6. rival gang gets out, lights club on fire with dead and ALIVE people inside of the club

there is a website called "El Blog del Narco" that pretty much details all the killings/slaying/kidnappings going on in Mexico.

really graphic because they show pictures of heads being chopped off, faces being pulled off, people hanging from under bridges and mass graves.

I won't link it here, but you can easily search it in Google. I went to their website right now and it's all in Spanish.

in the 30-45 seconds I searched the site, I couldn't find the "translate page" function, but if you do, you'll have a much better understanding of the shit that goes on.....

Sure you have. lol I am older than you and have lived around the world being in the military and before I joined. You don't know me and I am not here to argue what I know. You have your opinion and I disagree having been there, vacationed there and lived there.

My family is from there as well. There are certain spots I would avoid, yes, not the entire country, period, end of story.

Not all areas. This is known. Some spots are safe and some are not. You can say that for every other country in the World. This is fact and not up for debate. Most of this crime and gang related issues are on the Texas/Mexico border and has been for years. Also known.

yawn - don't pretend you know Mexico more than I do....

whoever is reading this thread, DO NOT take this clown's advice....

if you wanna take the chance by going to Mexico because some shitbird said it was ok, then that's on you...

being the person responsible for sending family to a cartel/drug war infested environment such as Mexico would be a burden I wouldn't want to be associated with....

good luck with all that....

I goto mexico almost every year and an employee of mine went a few weeks ago. My employee went to cancun (which I will never goto again) and said he felt safe. If they goto a resort and stay at the resort they will be ok. Playa del carmen is a small city that they can walk around and feel safe if they stay there. There are a ton of cops in Playa Del Carmen as well. Just don't be flashy.

With that said, my self and my sister have had plenty of things stolen from our suitcases at the Mexican airports. Also, in recent years the cops def. seem to be paid off by the drug dealers.

I've been to the bahamas once and didn't care for it. Maybe it was the area I was in but it doesnt offer the culture mexico does.

I've been led to believe that Mexico has been unsafe the last few years. However, I know some people that went in the last 3 months (different occasions) and I did not hear anything about it being unsafe. They went to Cabo and Cancun.
